Learning Disability Speech and Language Therapy

Read more about this page below

The LD Speech and Language Therapy team work with service users and their carers to support their communication needs and their communication environments using alternative methods as necessary. They also assess and manage and dysphagia risks, with aim of making mealtimes safer.

We can give advice and support on communication difficulties for people who have mild to profound learning disabilities. Carers (communication partners) can help patients:

  • express themselves better
  • help their understanding
  • foster social closeness
  • 1:1 impairment-based work with clients doesn’t work

For clients with dysphagia, we work with them and their carers to:

  • Reduce risks of dysphagia and keep clients safe
  • Maintain independence
  • Keep mealtimes as enjoyable as possible.
