Some of our walk-in services are currently operating differently. This page provides information about the services currently operating at our walk-in and urgent care centres and how you can access them.
To help keep our patients and staff as safe as possible, all visitors to our Walk-In Centres are being asked to wear a face mask if they can. Masks will be available at sites if needed.
Please remember to wash your hands regularly to help limit the spread of infections, and please stay at home if you’re unwell, especially if you have symptoms of cold, flu, diarrhoea, or vomiting.
The walk-in centre at Edgware Community Hospital is open from 8am to 8pm, every day, including weekends and bank holidays (last patient booking before 7pm).
Edgware walk-in centre provides same day medical help when it’s not a life-threatening emergency. The service is open 8am to 7pm, 7 days a week and 365 days a year.
The service may reach capacity before 7pm and in this case patients attending may be given advice on where and when they can access care.
People who go to an urgent care or walk-in centres are typically:
- mobile and able to move around
- in need of same-day treatment.
Walk-in centres are NOT suitable for emergencies such as:
- pregnancy related conditions
- chest pain
- breathing difficulties
- severe pain
- suspected strokes.
The service is not able to order or carry out blood tests or scans.
Patients should consider calling 999 or attending an emergency department.
Walk-in centres are suitable for people of have minor injuries and minor illness including:
- minor headaches
- ear problems
- sprains and strains
- wound infections
- minor burns and scalds
- minor head injuries with no loss of consciousness
- acute minor skin conditions
- minor abdominal discomfort and gastrointestinal problems
- insect and (minor) animal bites
- minor eye injuries
- minor injuries to the back, shoulder, and chest
- emergency contraception
- urinary tract infections
- minor limb injuries and fractures
- minor respiratory illness such as coughs and sore throats
- new wounds requiring closure or dressing.
The centre has x-ray facilities through the hours of service for adults and children over 2 years.
Appointments can be booked through 111, who can advise the most appropriate place to be seen for your condition.
To improve equity of access to unscheduled care services across the London Borough of Barnet, the opening hours of our walk-in centre at Finchley Memorial Hospital have changed.
This is a temporary change whilst urgent care services are reviewed across North Central London and was made effective from 11 September 2023.
The walk-in centre at Finchley Memorial Hospital is open from 8am to 8pm, Monday - Sunday (last patient booking at 7pm).

Our practitioners will be able to assess, diagnose and treat a number of acute minor illnesses and manage acute wounds via this service.They are able to prescribe medications where required.
Alongside the Walk in Centre we have an appointment service for wound care/dressing changes. For your initial wound care you must attend as a walk-in and if your wound is suitable for the WiC, you can make appointments going forward for a maximum of 2 weeks.
Attending the Walk in Centre
When you arrive at the Walk-in centre you will be booked in by one of our reception coordinators who will ask you some details about you and the reason for your visit. You will then wait for the initial assessment known as triage which is usually within 15 minutes after being booked in. Triage is performed to ensure we are the most appropriate healthcare service for you. A clinical practitioner will either advise you to wait for a further consultation or redirect you to the most appropriate healthcare provider if it’s a condition we cannot manage.
Who can use a walk-in centre:
- People of all ages including children over 2
- Those travelling from outside the UK (EU residents should bring their European Health insurance card)
- Those not registered with a GP
What we can help with:
- Sprains and strains
- Wound infections
- Minor abdominal discomfort
- Minor skin conditions
- Minor burns
- Ear problems
- Sore throat
- Emergency contraception
What we cannot help with:
- Chronic illness (long term health problem that doesn’t go away and often requires ongoing care or treatment)
- Leg ulcers
- Pregnancy related illnesses
- Children under 2
- Repeat prescriptions (please contact NHS 111 or a pharmacy)
- Sexual Health (Please attend local sexual health clinic)
- Xray
- Travel vaccinations
- Sick certificates
If English is not your first language, please ask the clinician to arrange an interpreter to support your assessment.

- Monday to Sunday: 08:30-18:10 (closed 13:30-14:00)
Please note only limb x-rays provided for acute injuries - no head, face, neck, chest, back, hip or abdominal X-rays available.
