Paediatric Nutrition and Dietetic Service

Our paediatric nutrition and dietetic service is a team of registered dietitians specialised in paediatric nutrition who provide specialist children’s dietetic services.

The service provides support for children with food allergy and intolerance, coeliac disease, complex obesity, dysphagia, enteral feeding, gastroenterology, faltering growth and malnutrition, restricted diets, special needs, and vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

The Barnet service offers individual consultations for:

  • Home Enteral Tube Feeding
  • Appropriate prescribing

Clinics run every other Tuesday at Bessborough Health Centre and on Thursday and Friday at Woodfield Road Medical Centre. 

Please be advised, all other consultations are held via BlueJeans Video Conferencing or you may telephone. Available Mondays and Tuesdays. 

The Merton service offers individual consultations for: 

  • Home Enteral Tube Feeding 
  • Management of food allergies and intolerances 
  • Treating diagnosed nutrient deficiencies 
  • Faddy or fussy eating 
  • Complex obesity and weight related issues 
  • Faltering growth  
  • Conditions which adversely affect nutrition  
  • Fluid restriction or poor fluid intake

  • Be registered with a GP in Barnet
  • Home enteral feeding- gastrostomy or nasogastric tube in situ
  • Allergy formulae - for appropriate prescribing assessment, advice and management

Inclusion criteria

Be registered with a GP in Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster and meet the referral criteria below:


•    Known or suspected food allergies & intolerances
•    Restricted range in diet e.g. Autistic Spectrum Disorder
•    Fussy eaters who have not responded to first line advice
•    Restricted range in diet with >2 centiles difference in weight and height
•    Complex obesity +/- underlying medical conditions: BMI ≥ 98th centile on paediatric BMI chart
•    Nutrient Deficiencies e.g. Iron deficiency anaemia, calcium deficiency, vitamin D deficiency or rickets supported by blood test results or medical reports
•    Faltering Growth defined as 2+ centile difference between weight and height/length, weight/length or BMI <0.4th centile, weight crossing 1 or more centile spaces if weight centile <9th centile, weight crossing 2 or more centile spaces  if weight centile 9th-91st centile or weight crossing 3 or more weight centile spaces if weight centile >91st centile
•    Review of prescribed Oral Nutritional Supplements (ONS)
•    Enteral Tube Feeding (NGT/NJT/PEG/PEJ/PEG-J)
•    Gastrointestinal Conditions e.g. Constipation/  Diarrhoea

  • Infants, children and young people 0-19 years  
  • 19-26 years for young adults with an Educational Health Care Plan 
  • Registered with a Merton CCG GP Surgery 
  • Attend a Special School within Merton 
  • AND meet the referral criteria below: 

I. Condition which adversely affects nutrition eg. increased nutritional requirements, Prader Willi Syndrome, dysphagia amongst others

II. Restricted range in diet eg. Autism Spectrum Disorder 

III. Condition with a dietary cause eg. fatty liver, high cholesterol amongst others 

IV. Nutrient deficiencies eg. iron deficiency anaemia 

V. Faltering Growth defined as : 2+ centile difference between weight and height/length, weight/length or BMI <0.4th centile, weight crossing 1 or more centile spaces if weight centile <9th centile, weight crossing 2 or more centile spaces if weight centile 9th-91st centile or weight 

VI. Complex obesity +/- underlying medical conditions: BMI ≥ 98th centile on paediatric BMI chart 

VII.Gastrointestinal conditions eg. constipation / diarrhoea 

VIII. Known of suspected food allergy and intolerances  

IX. Enteral tube feeding                    

X. Review of prescribed oral nutritional supplements (ONS)      

Home visits are available to those children who are enterally fed.
