Engaging patients: Transforming care at Robertson Neurorehabilitation Ward
Patients at the Robertson Neurorehabilitation Ward, part of the Outer Northwest Division, recently participated in a patient focus group engagement workshop aimed at refining and enhancing their care experience. Facilitated by a multidisciplinary team, the session provided an opportunity for patients to share insights on the ward’s purpose, the Brent Neurorehab Transformation (BNT) Project, and a new Day Room Makeover initiative.
Shaping purpose and aims
Through collaborative brainstorming, the ward’s therapy and nursing teams presented an updated vision of the unit's purpose and aims. Patients reviewed the proposals, ensuring they were clear, concise, and patient-friendly. Their feedback was essential in crafting an accessible mission statement tailored to patient needs.
Transformative rehabilitation services
Central to the discussion was the Brent Neurorehab Transformation Project, a major initiative designed to improve therapy offerings, optimise staffing, and encourage self-management. Patients shared positive feedback on Active Gym sessions, praising their motivational atmosphere. They supported innovations like early therapist involvement in morning routines and the integration of technology in rehabilitation, while also calling for robust staff training and patient-family engagement to ensure the programme’s success.
One participant summed up the sentiment: "After a stroke, you are not as you were before." This statement highlighted the need for individualised care and stronger patient-staff relationships.
Krishna Gundapudi, Clinical Therapy Lead said “The session was highly interactive and informative, providing a valuable opportunity for patient involvement in service design and implementation (co-production). We look forward to hosting more sessions like this as we continue to enhance our service and seek further patient perspectives.”
A new social hub: The "Robertson Lounge"
Patients were also excited to contribute to plans for a vibrant day room makeover. After selecting a preferred design, they suggested renaming the space the "Robertson Lounge," envisioning it as a welcoming hub for relaxation and social activities.
A commitment to engaging with patients
The focus group demonstrated the power of patient involvement in shaping healthcare services. Patients valued the opportunity to influence the ward's evolution, highlighting the importance of engagement in delivering truly patient-centred care.
