North Central Diabetes team recognised for outstanding DESMOND work
DESMOND (Diabetes Education and Self Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed) is part of a school of patient education for people with diabetes, delivered by a number of NHS organisations. The DESMOND organisation hosts an annual award event, recognising the achievements of teams delivering such programmes over the last year.
Nikoletta Siddique, Diabetes Specialist Nurse, was awarded the Excellence in Group Education award, which is given to someone who has gone above and beyond and been exemplary in what they have achieved when delivering group education.
Nikoletta has been instrumental in the success of the DESMOND programme since its launch in Barnet in April 2023. After earning her DESMOND Educator accreditation within a year, she played a key role in the programme’s smooth integration across the area.
Her contributions include creating a promotional video on early intervention and driving a project to recruit Hindi-speaking patients to help reduce local health inequalities. She’s known for her ability to manage complex cases and her proactive approach to patient education. Nikoletta exemplifies the values of the programme through her dedication and impact.
On winning the award, Nikoletta said: “It is an honour to receive this award. I am very grateful that I am part of such a great team. Winning this is very inspirational and it motivates me further to improve patient care in diabetes. Providing the best care to my ability hopefully will enable my patients to manage their conditions confidently and effectively. Thank you so much to the whole Barnet Diabetes Team for supporting me on my journey. A huge thank you to Anita, our Team Lead for letting me show my capabilities.”
The Barnet diabetes team was also recognised as one of the top five teams in the country for delivering the DESMOND programme.
Anita Parobiec, Clinical Lead Diabetes Specialist Nurse, said: “Being recognised as one of the top five teams is a testament to the team dedication, expertise, and passion for patient care. This distinction highlights the exceptional effort the team invested in empowering patients with type 2 diabetes to manage their condition effectively from the point of diagnosis. Such recognition not only validates our hard work but also reassures patients that they are receiving top-quality education and support.”
