Making the best of every day: The Kaleidoscope team’s compassionate work with children and families

Published: 8th May 2025

As part of Dying Matters Week, we are proud to spotlight the exceptional work of the Kaleidoscope team – a group of Specialist Paediatric Palliative Care Nurses, Palliative Play Specialists, and a dedicated coordinator who go above and beyond to support children with life-limiting conditions, as well as their families.

The full 40-minute version, which includes extended interviews with staff and families, is available to watch on YouTube:

The video gives an in-depth look into the compassionate and holistic work of the Kaleidoscope team. It features moving insights from staff, a grandparent, and a father, sharing the real-life impact of the care provided. Please note: the video contains discussions about the death of children.

The team’s mission is simple yet profound – to help children live well, whatever time they have. By offering tailored clinical and emotional support, the Kaleidoscope team ensures children and their families receive expert care and feel valued, heard, and supported at every step.

The video also highlights the team’s innovative collaborations with community organisations including QPR, Chelsea and Brentford Football Clubs, and London Zoo – partnerships that make memorable moments possible for young patients and their siblings. These events are not just joyful distractions; they are essential experiences that contribute meaningfully to family wellbeing during challenging times.

In the words of the Kaleidoscope Paediatric Services Coordinator, who also serves as the team’s Wellbeing Ambassador, “Caring for others begins with caring for ourselves.” She organises activities like yoga and meditation to ensure the wellbeing of the team itself.

The video also captures the voices of families. A father speaks about the significance of the events organised for his child and how they’ve provided critical emotional support for his other children. A grandparent shares the comfort and confidence the team gave during a time of uncertainty.

During Dying Matters Week, we are reminded that talking about death is not about giving up hope – it's about making the most of life. The Kaleidoscope team embodies this philosophy, helping children and families treasure each day.
