Honouring Armed Forces Reserves Day: A personal reflection from Akshay Patel

Published: 25th June 2025

On Wednesday 25 June 2025, we mark Armed Forces Reserves Day - an opportunity to celebrate and recognise the vital role of Reservists in defending the UK’s interests at home and overseas. The day precedes Armed Forces Day, held this year on Saturday 28 June.

While many will take part in parades and public events, for Akshay Patel - a serving Army Reserve Officer and Operational Lead Physiotherapist in CLCH’s Hertfordshire division - the day is also a time for personal reflection and gratitude.

Akshay said: “As a Reserve Officer in a medical unit, I’ve had the privilege over the past eight years to experience world-class training both in the UK and abroad. It’s given me the chance to work alongside an inspiring and diverse group of people, and to contribute to something much bigger than myself.”

Akshay first joined the Reserves motivated by a desire to challenge himself and make a meaningful impact beyond his civilian role.

“I was drawn in by the 'X factor' - the chance to do something different from day-to-day NHS life. I also felt a strong sense of service. My initial officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where the motto is 'Serve to Lead', helped shape my approach to leadership and how I support others.”

Akshay says his military experience has strengthened his NHS career: “The leadership, planning, and analytical skills I’ve developed through the Reserves have enhanced my confidence and capability in my NHS work. Some of the military training I’ve undertaken is equivalent to a master’s qualification, and I have also taken part in a variety of clinical and non-clinical courses, many of which I have been able to apply directly in my NHS role.

Balancing Reserve commitments with a full-time NHS role is not without its challenges, but Akshay finds it highly rewarding: “It’s made me more focused, disciplined, and better at pushing past my limits. I’d encourage anyone who’s curious about the Reserves - Army, Navy, or Royal Air Force - to explore what’s out there. You can contact your local unit or visit the official websites for more information.”
