Earth Day litter pick shows the power of local partnerships

Published: 29th April 2025

Last week, staff from Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust (CLCH) joined West London NHS Trust (WLT) and Ealing Council for a litter pick along the Grand Union Canal in Southall.

The event marked Earth Day (22 April) and followed this year’s theme: our power, our planet. The theme is a reminder that we all have a part to play in protecting our environment.

The day brought together Green Champions and staff from across the two Trusts. They were joined by Ealing Council’s climate action and sustainability team, who provided litter-picking tools and support.

Tom Wright, Director of Sustainability at CLCH, said: “Earth Day reminds us that we are a community living together on this fragile planet. The litter pick event is an example of the benefits of collaboration and how we can take small steps to improve lives in our local neighbourhood.”

Anna Phelon, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, who also took part, said: “The joint CLCH and WLT litter pick was a great way for staff from both organisations to come together on Earth Day, give back to the local community, and show our commitment to environmental responsibility. It helped to raise awareness about sustainability amongst participants, and to strengthen our shared values—while enjoying the fresh air and connecting with colleagues.”

This event supports the aims in CLCH’s Green Plan, which you can read on the Green Plan page.
