Disability History Month 2024: Celebrating inclusive communication
As we continue to celebrate Disability History Month 2024, CLCH is proud to highlight our ongoing partnership with Pursuing Independent Paths (PIP), a charity dedicated to empowering adults with learning disabilities to achieve their ambitions.
Makaton is a unique communication programme using a blend of symbols, signs, and speech to help people with learning disabilities express themselves.
CLCH collaborated with PIP to produce a short Makaton video guide, designed to help our staff learn useful, everyday sign language. This video has become a valuable resource for staff members working directly with people with learning disabilities, reinforcing the Trust’s dedication to inclusivity and accessible communication.
Kunden Patel, CLCH Speech & Language Therapy Clinical Lead in Learning Disabilities said “I am proud that we can Disability History Month as a platform to share these videos. It is really important to me to work with our service users as experts and to showcase how they can contribute to our work in a very meaningful way. CLCH commissioned these short videos and this in turn meant that they were able to train their staff to use Makaton. A win-win all round.”
This Disability History Month, we want to encourage everyone to learn more about Makaton. To explore Makaton’s work and how it supports inclusive communication, visit makaton.org.
CLCH is proud to champion inclusivity and collaborate closely with organisations like PIP that develop confidence in people to reach their fullest potential.
