Merton falls prevention team is supporting the launch of a new walking football project.
The weekly sessions are organised by Age UK Merton and the AFC Wimbledon Foundation – they are open for men and women of all ages over 50 and all abilities.
Jenny Perry, a CLCH physiotherapist practitioner, specialising in postural stability, attended and took part in the first session. “Walking football offers loads of health benefits for older people, such as reducing risk of heart disease or stroke – as well as lowering blood pressure.
“It’s a really enjoyable way of staying fit and healthy and, over time, participants will notice a positive impact on their body strength, stamina, improving muscles, stability as well as helping to manage their weight.
“Exercise is for life.”
Over 50s walking football in Merton takes place on Fridays at Canons Leisure Centre, Madeira Road, Mitcham CR4 4HD. The sessions run from 11am–12.30pm (arrive by 10.30am).
