Growing together: how Safiya Riley built a career helping children thrive

Published: 5th March 2026

Community healthcare can be a surprisingly dynamic and fulfilling career, something Safiya Riley discovered almost by accident.

After spending four years training as a dietitian, Safiya began to question whether hospital ward work was right for her. During a COVID-19 placement, the fast-paced acute environment left her feeling uncertain. Although she finished her degree and applied for hospital roles, she knew her heart wasn’t in them. Then she spotted a Food Project Officer role at CLCH.

“I almost didn’t apply because I didn’t realise a dietitian’s skills could be used this way; I submitted my application on the very last day and it changed everything.”

Now part of the Healthy Families team in Ealing, Safiya’s work extends far beyond the bedside. One day she’s encouraging toddlers to try vegetables at a church stay-and-play, the next she’s supporting teenagers to explore the link between food and mood. She collaborates with school nurses, early start workers and public health colleagues to help children and families lead healthier lives.

Her development at CLCH has been extensive. “I’ve been supported through internal and external training, and most recently I was awarded a fully funded Master’s in Public Health. It’s helped me connect academic theory with my practical work.”

Safiya also values CLCH’s inclusive culture. “CLCH truly walks the talk as a disability-confident employer. My ADHD is seen as a strength, and I’ve been given the flexibility and opportunities to shadow and deputise, preparing me for the next step in my career.”

Her advice is: “Don’t feel boxed in by the traditional clinical route. Community dietetics allows for deep behaviour change and lasting connections.”

“Community care matters because when we support people where they live and learn, we can spark change before they ever reach the hospital doors.”

The CLCH Academy provides education and training opportunities to all CLCH staff, helping them to develop skills, knowledge, accreditation to grow their careers. Find out more on our website.
